What is Erosion?
The wearing away and removal of rock by rivers, sea, ice and the wind
1 of 14
Name the 4 chief types of erosion
Rivers, sea, ice and wind
2 of 14
The relationship between erosion and weathering
They both work together. Weathering breaks up and weakens the surface of rocks while erosion wears away and removes the loosened material.
3 of 14
Explain River erosion
Rivers wear away tiny bits of rock from their bed, and eat into the banks on either side of the channel. The material is carried downstream and deposited when the water slows down. In floods, large boulders may be loosened and rolled down the bed.
4 of 14
Explain Ice erosion
A glacier is a tongue of ice moving down a valley. Stones and boulders that fall onto it freeze into the ice and act like sandpaper on the rocks beneath. As the glacier moves,it carries the material downwards, wearing away the valley bottom & sides.
5 of 14
Explain Sea erosion
Coastlines are constantly hit by waves. When the waves keep on hitting the rocks, the rocks weaken and pieces break off. Currents carry the loose material away and deposit it elsewhere.
6 of 14
Explain Wind erosion
The wind picks up particles of sand and blasts them against anything that is in the way. Rocks in desert areas are often eroded into strange shapes by this sandblasting effect.
7 of 14
Glacier
A slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles.
8 of 14
Waves
Formed when wind blows over the sea
9 of 14
Current
The flow of water in a certain direction
10 of 14
Transportation
The movement of material by rivers, sea, ice and wind
11 of 14
Deposition
The laying down of material carried by rivers, sea, ice or wind
12 of 14
Summary
Erosion is the wearing away of rocks and its removal by streams, ice, waves and wind. Erosion, transportation and deposition help shape the land
