Equity Theory
People weigh up the rewards and costs of a relationship but they expect the relationship to be fair. If the relationship is unfair, at least one individual will become unhappy . The loser will feel dissatisfied whist the winner will feel guilty.

However if the relationship is long term one with considerable previous investment, the partner will be motivated to repair the relationship.
