Enzymes (Page 21)

?
What is the definition of a catalyst?
A catalyst is something that speeds up a reaction, without being used up.
1 of 13
What are enzymes?
Biological Catalysts
2 of 13
What makes a reaction happen quicker?
High temperatures
3 of 13
What happens if a temperature gets to high in a reaction?
Cells get damaged
4 of 13
Enzymes are...
all proteins made of chains of amino acids.
5 of 13
What do proteins also act as?
structural components of tissues (eg. muscles), hormones and antibodies
6 of 13
What does every enzyme have?
A unique shape that fits onto the substance involved in a reaction.
7 of 13
How many reactions does an enzyme catalyse?
Usually one
8 of 13
What happens if the substance doesn't match the enzyme shape?
the reaction will not be catalysed
9 of 13
What happens if the catalysed reaction gets too hot?
Some of the bonds holding the enzyme together break. The special shape is destroyed.
10 of 13
What does the enzyme become if it gets too hot?
Denatured
11 of 13
What temperature do enzymes usually work at in the human body?
37 degrees
12 of 13
What else also effects enzymes?
If the pH is too high or low
