enzymes and the digestive system 2

?
how is the rate of an enzyme- controlled reaction measured ?
by time course , the length of time it takes for a particular event to run its course
1 of 11
how does the temperature affect the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction ?
higher temperature faster the reaction until it starts to change hape and denaturing enzyme any higher temperatures than this slows down the reactiom
2 of 11
how does ph effect the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction ?
each enzyme has an optimum ph , if this ph is higher or lower the reaction is slowed down dramatically.
3 of 11
why do enzymes denature at high temperatures ?
because hydrogen and other bonds that form the molecule of the enzyme break down , this causes the active site to change shape.
4 of 11
what two ways does having too high or low ph affect an enzyme ?
it alters the charge of amino acids and active site so the substrate cannot be attached . also can cause the bonds that make the tertiary structure to break makeing the enzyme and active site to change shape.
5 of 11
how does substrate concentration effect the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction ?
the higher the concentration the faster the reaction until allt he enzymes are working as fast as they can and the reaction reaches its maximum
6 of 11
what are enzyme inhibitors ?
substances that directly or indirectly interfere with the functioning of the active site of an enzyme and so reduce its activity
7 of 11
what are reversible inhibitors ?
inhibitors that only make temporary attachments to the active site
8 of 11
what is a competitive inhibitor ?
substances which have a simular molecular shape to that of the substrate of an enzyme , therefore able to bind to the active site and slow down enzyme action
9 of 11
what is a non competitive inhibitor ?
substances which attach themselves to an enzyme at a site which is not the active site causing the active site to alter slowing down enzyme rate
10 of 11
why does the concentration of a substrate not affect the rate of an non competitive inhibitor?
because they are no competing for the same site
