Enzymes - key words

?
What is the active site?
the region of an enzyme with a tertiary structure that is complimentary to the shape of the substrate molecule
1 of 8
What is a catalyst?
a chemical that speeds up the rate of reaction and remains unchanged and reusable at the end of the reaction
2 of 8
What is a cofactor?
An essential substance that has to be present to ensure that the reaction takes place at the right rate
3 of 8
What is a prosthetic group?
A permanent cofactor
4 of 8
What is a coenzyme?
non-protein organic cofactors that temporarily bind to the enzymes active site
5 of 8
What is an inhibitor?
A substance that reduces or stops a reaction
6 of 8
What is a competitive inhibitor ?
This is where the inhibitor molecule has a similar shape to the substrate. It blocks the active site and prevent the formation of enzyme- substrate complexes
7 of 8
What is a non-competitive inhibitor?
The inhibitor molecule binds to the allosteric site away from the active site. This changes the shape of the active site so no enzyme-substrate complexes are formed. This is often permanet
