Enzymes

?
What is an enzyme?
a biological catalyst - speeds up chemical reactions in living organisms.
1 of 8
What are the properties of enzymes?
they're all large proteins, they all have an active site and they all work best at a specific temperature (the optimum)
2 of 8
What is the 'lock and key' model?
it's a model used to explain how enzymes work.
3 of 8
What are the two parts of the 'lock and key' model?
The chemical that reacts (substrate) - key. The enzyme's active site - lock.
4 of 8
What happens to an enzyme when they work in extreme pH or high temperatures?
the enzymes denature.
5 of 8
What happens to an enzyme once it's denatured?
the enzyme can no longer work.
6 of 8
What are the names of the three digestive enzymes?
Amylase, Lipase and Protease
7 of 8
Where is Amylaze produced?
salivary glands and the pancreas.
