What type of protein are enzymes?
Globular proteins
1 of 13
What happens to enzymes at high temperatures?
Denatures, bonds break, tertiary structure changes, can't form enzyme-substrate complex
2 of 13
What are competitive inhibitors?
Bind to active site preventing substrate from forming enzyme substrate complex
3 of 13
What are non-competitive inhibitors?
Bind to site that is not active site, changing shape of active site, so substrate can't bind
4 of 13
Describe the Biuret test
Add same amount of sodium hydroxide and copper sulfate and mix. Turns purple
5 of 13
How do enzymes act as biological catalysts?
Lower the activation energy and increase rate of reaction
6 of 13
What is the effect of temperature of enzymes?
Increases up to optimum temperature then denatures after this as bonds break, changing tertiary structure
7 of 13
What is the effect of pH on enzymes?
Effective at optimum pH but denature above or below this as charges on amino acids are altered
8 of 13
Describe an enzyme
Specific 3D shape, functional active site, form enzyme-substrate complex
9 of 13
What is the effect of enzyme concentration?
Increases rate of reaction up to a point where there are too many enzymes for number of substrate molecules
10 of 13
What is the effect of substrate concentration?
Increases rate of reaction up to a point when substrate will be left "queueing" as all active sites are occupied
11 of 13
What is the induced fit model?
The active site changes shape slightly as the substrate binds
12 of 13
What is optimum temperature/pH?
Conditions which make the enzyme work most effectively
