Environmental and Medical Issues

?
Causes of Global Warming:
1) Burning fossil fuels. 2) Deforestation. 3) Natural climate change. 4) Solar Activity.
1 of 40
Solutions:
1) Renewable energy sources. 2) Cars could use hydrogen or biofuels. 3) Make things more efficient. 4) Use public transport.
2 of 40
The Problem and Solution to Acid Rain:
Sulfure dioxide and nitrogen oxide dissolve in water forming sulfuric acid and nitric acid which destroys forests and buildings. The solution is to use alternatives to fossil fuels.
3 of 40
The Problem and Solution to Human Waste:
Sewage attracts vermin which can carry disease. The solution to ths problem is to recycle more and use sewage to produce electricity.
4 of 40
The Problem and Solution to Eutrophication:
Excess acids can lead to a lack of oxygen and more algae, killing fish. The solution is to use better sewage treatments and have less nitrates in fertilisers.
5 of 40
The Problem and Solution to Radioactive Pollution:
Nuclear power stations and their waste take thousands of years to become safe and the waste can cause cancer. A solution to this is to reprocess nuclear waste as 97% of it is reusable.
6 of 40
Overall problems:
Acid rain & Eutrophication & Radioactive waste & Human waste.
7 of 40
Types of Natural Resources:
Renewable - will not run out but can be expensive eg. solar. Non-renewable - finite, will run out eg. fossil fuels.
8 of 40
Solutions to Not Using all Non-Renewable Resources:
1) Use renewable sources. 2) Recycling extends finite sources. 3) Cars run out if water and sugar cane. 4) Plant chemicals can be used to make plastics.

Christian Teachings on Stewardship:
1) God made the world as a gift perfectly for us. 2) Jesus - Sermon on the Mount - the earth should be shared fairly. 3) Judgement day. 4) Parable of the talents - have to leave the earth better than you found it.
10 of 40
How Does This Affect Christian Life:
1) Try to reduce pollution and preserve resources. 2) Help people in LEDC's. 3) Support conservation groups. 4) Good steward = good christian.
11 of 40
Islamic Teachings on being a Khalifah:
1) Adam = 1st Khalifah, continued role. 2) Judgement day. 3) Allah gave the gift as the earth. 4) Tawhid belief means harming envionmnet = harming ourselves.
12 of 40
How This Affects Muslim Life:
1) Reduce pollution . 2) Shariah Law says to share resources - help people in LEDC's. 3) Support the work of environmental groups. 4)Judge how faithful they are by how good of a khalfiah they are. BUT... human concerns must be considered.

Why Are Infertility Treatments Important?:
1) 12.5% of UK couple have fertility issues. 2) 1.5 million men in UK have fertility problems. 3) Purpose of Marriage - Procreation. 4) Human nature to want children. 5) Depression can be caused by infertility.
14 of 40
Why is this considered to be a one-sided view?:
1) Population growth - unstable rate - bad for environment. 2) Expensive, money could be spent on saving lives. 3) Millions of children need to be adopted.
15 of 40
Christian (Catholic) Attitudes against Infertility Treatments:
1) No one has the right to children. 2) Playing God - God intended for procreation to be part of a sex act in marriage. 3) Masturbation is sinful. 4) IVF wastes embryos.
16 of 40
Christian (C of E) Attitudes for Infertility Treatments:
1) IVF and AIH allowed because it it fulfills a purpose of marriage. 2) Okay if it is theirs biologically. 3) Double doctrine of effect - discarded embryos are a byproduct.
17 of 40
Islamic Attitudes Accepting Infertility Treatments:
Most Accept IVF and AIH as 1) it is a form of medecine that allows a family which muslims are expected to have. 2) if the married couple give the gametes the baby is theirs.
18 of 40
Islamic Attitudes Against Infertility Treatments:
Gamete donation is forbidden as 1) Adoption (forbidden in Islam) - It denies children the right to know their parents which is important in Islam. 2) It is seen as adultery.

Types of Transplant Surgery:
1) Organs from the dead. 2) Non-vital organs from a living donor.
20 of 40
Why is Transplant Surgery Important:
1) Cures life-threatening diseases and improves lives. 2) It could save over 4000 extra lives each year if enough donors were found. 3) People needing them increases by 8% per annum. 4) Let's people help others even after they die.
21 of 40
Christian Attitudes to Transplant Surgery:
1) Most agree as long as no one is exploited. 2) Against transplants from the dead but okay from living relatives. 3) Not okay at all.
22 of 40
Reasons for Mostly Agreeing:
1) Immortality of the soul. 2) Jesus said to love thy neighbour. 3) Poor people selling their organs would be exploitation. 4) At the resurrection God is able to transform our bodies so the organs are not needed.

Islamic Attitudes to Transplant Surgery:
1) Most are against it. 2) Allow the use from a living donor.

31 of 40
Creation:
The act of creating the universe, or the universe which has been creating.
