Dynamic equilibrium
The equilibrium that exists in a closed system, where the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal and the concentration of reactants and products are constant
1 of 11
Le Chatelier's principle
When a system in dynamic equilibrium is subjected to a change, the position of equilibrium will shift to minimise the change
2 of 11
Activation energy
The minimum energy required by reactants to react to form products
3 of 11
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of reaction, without being used up in the process, by providing an alternative reaction path with a lower activation energy
4 of 11
Enthalpy
Heat energy stored within a chemical system
5 of 11
Enthalpy change
Heat exchange with surroundings during a chemical reaction
6 of 11
Enthalpy of combustion
The exothermic heat change which accompanies the complete combustion of one mole of a substance
7 of 11
Enthalpy of neutralisation
The exothermic heat change which accompanies the formation of one mole of water when an acid and a base react
8 of 11
Average bond enthalpy
The endothermic heat change required to break one mole of covalent bonds in gaseous molecules, averaged over a range of molecules containing that bond
9 of 11
Enthalpy change of formation
The heat change which accompanies the formation of one mole of a substance from its elememts
10 of 11
Hess's law
The enthalpy change from reactant to product is the same, independent of the route taken
