Nature
The book begins setting a nature scene, and ends with the same nature scene.

Loneliness
Ranch workers usally travel seperately and are lonely and have no family(1930's depression). Crooks is lonely because he is black (1930's racism) Curly's wife is lonely because Curly doesn't pay attention to her and she wanted to be a Hollywood star.

Role of women
We never learn Curly's wife's name, she always makes herself look pretty, Curly always makes her stay in the house alone, the ranch men think she's a tart. Many of the ranch men go to the whorehouse and waste all their money on sex and alcohol.

Throughout the book there is a build up of tension, and a sense that it is Lennie's destiny to die.

In the book there are three power figures, The Boss who we don't hear much about, Curly who is crazy on power and abuses it and Slim who is the ranch leader and is mutually respected.

Curly's wife threatens Crooks that she could get him hung quickly, because in the 1930's there were trials for black people, and they were often lynched by mobs. Crooks's character is a symbol for racism and shows how poorly treated black people were
