main verb
single verb which expresses the main meaning. e.g. the woman STROLLED down the road

auxiliary verb
a 'helping' verb, placed in front of a main verb.

modal verb
can only be used in conjunction with a main verb e.g. you WILL do your homework

an infinitive
base or stem of a verb, always includes the word 'to' e.g. to run, to walk, to be

transitive verb
takes an object e.g. he caught the ball

intransitive verb
cannot take an object, often used to express states e.g. he trembled as he watched the film

active voice
when a verb is used actively, the person is performing an action. e.g. the minister issued an apology

passive voice
occurs when an object moves into the subject position e.g. an apology was issued by the minister

dynamic verb
where the situation changes over time e.g. he ate the cake

stative verb
where the situation remains constant e.g. he believes in God (love & hold are also stative verbs
