Is it written, spoken or somewhere in-between? Is it a letter, a report, a newspaper?

Exclamation marks, three part lists, rhetorical questions, hyphens, colons?

Quotations, References to specialists, Famous people, Events, Shared knowledge
Does this make the writing more convincing? More exciting? More academic?

Technical Aspects and Phonology
Similes, metaphors, alliteration, ellipses etc. Why are these used and what effect do they have? Onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhyme or assonance? Why?

Mood/ Tone
Formal/ Informal? Contractions used? Sensationalist? Think why that mood or tone has been used in that situation.

Paragraphs
Look for paragraph length, setup and layout.

Sentence Structure
Simple, compound, complex? Simple sentences are found more in writing with young audiences, complex sentences are more academic.

Graphology
Images, logos, size of text, font used, use of white space- What effect does this have?

Clauses
Look at clause elements- Are they regular? Verb-less clauses are often found in newspaper headlines such as 'Rooney out for six weeks'.

Pronouns
Does it use the second personal pronoun 'you'? (Direct address, used to integrate reader), Demonstrative pronouns, Indefinite pronouns?

To anybody reading this- this is just a list of things to look out for in the exam- if you get all of these then you are sorted! I use the acronym NVAMP STAMPS QGPC (it has a nice rhythm if you say it out loud). Also remember to use GASP for genre, audience, subject and purpose. Good luck! **
