enjambment
when a sentence/ phrase runs over from one line/ stanza to the next

the use of exaggeration to emphasise a point

poetry with a metre of 10 syllables- 5 of them stressed & 5 unstressed

iambic tetrameter

internal rhyme
when two or more words in the same line rhyme

juxtaposition
two contrasting ideas, characters or descriptions that are close to each other

onomatopoeia
a word that sounds like the thing it's describing, e.g. clicking, pluck

oxymoron
a phrase which appears to contradict itself, e.g. warm ice

pathetic fallacy
giving human emotions to objects or aspects of nature, in order to create a certain mood

sibilance
repetition of 's' and 'sh' sounds

volta
a turning point in a poem, when the argument or tone changes dramatically

phonetic spelling
when words are spelt as they sound rather than with their usual spelling, e.g. 'di' instead of 'the'

colloquial
sounding like everyday spoken language
