Where does conduction occur particularly?
In metals
1 of 21
True or False: "non-metals are poor conductors of heat"
true, non metals are Thermal insulators
2 of 21
True of False: "Liquids and gases are poor conductors of heat"
True
3 of 21
What is another name for 'free electrons'?
delocalized electrons
4 of 21
Explain what happens during conduction. first half
1. Metal consists of lots of free electrons, 2. They move about at random inside the metal and hold the positive ions in place, 3. The electrons collide with eachother and the metal ions,
5 of 21
Explain what happens during conduction. second half
4. When you heat the metal, the electrons at the heated end gain kinetic energy, 5. These electrons diffuse through the metal and collide with other free electrons & ions in the cooler parts of the metal, 5. They transfer some of their kinetic energy

In what substances does convection occur?
in fluids: liquids and gases- things that can flow
7 of 21
How is heat transferred from hot to cold places
by convection
8 of 21
Explain Convection
When one part of a fluid is heated, the particles there gain kinetic energy and move further apart. The fluid becomes less dense in that partiular region and rises- being replaced by cooler fluid. This is called a convection current.
9 of 21
What is thermal radiation?
thermal radiation is how heat travels without requiring particles.
10 of 21
give an example of thermal radiation
heat reaches the us from the sun despite the vacuum of outer space
11 of 21
What will an object that absorbs thermal radiation do?
it will warm up
12 of 21
How would you make the leslie cube experiment a fair test?
make sure that the faces are all of the same area as a small space takes less time to heat up
13 of 21
In the Leslie cube experiment, on which face was the highest temp detected?
The matt black surface
14 of 21
list the order of each surface- highest first, lowest temp last
matt black surface, shiny black surface, white surface, shiny matal
15 of 21
why was the shiny metal the lowest in temperature
because shiny, light surfaces reflect the radiation that falls on them
16 of 21
What is another name for empty space?
a vacuum
17 of 21
draw a diagram that shows convection.
diagram:
18 of 21
true or false, "heat rises"
false, hot air, liquids and fluids rise
19 of 21
true or false, "if anything gets hot enough, it gives out light rays as well as infared rays"
true
20 of 21
What is the difference between conduction and convection?
Conduction happens when thermal energy travels through a substance (mainly solids), whereas convetion happens when a hot substance moves and carries thermal energy with it
