equipment used
metal powder, thermometer, polystyrene cup, pyrex beaker, hydrochloric acid.
1 of 13
step one
set up the equipment as shown. (put the cup inside the beaker and fill the cup with hydrochloric acid. use a thermometer to measure the temperature change once the metal powder is added)
2 of 13
step two
take the temperature of the acid
3 of 13
step three
add the metal powder and stir
4 of 13
step four
record the highest temperature the reaction mixture reaches
5 of 13
step five
calculate the temp. change for the reaction.
6 of 13
step six
repeat the experiment using a different metal
7 of 13
considerations, mistakes and errors
there should be a correlation between the reactivity of the metal and the temp. change. i.e. the more reactive the metal, the more the temp. change.
8 of 13
considerations, mistakes and errors
during measuring there is always uncertainty of the accuracy of the results. if three measurements are taken then a mean can be found.
9 of 13
indipendant variable.
the metal used
10 of 13
dependant variable
temperature change
11 of 13
control variable
type, concentration and volume of acid.
12 of 13
hazards and risks
there is a low risk of corrosive acid damaging the experimenter's eye, so eye protection must be used.
