What is the conservation of energy principle?
Energy cannot be made or destroyed. It can only be transformed from one form to another.
1 of 15
What are the different energy types?
thermal, kinetic, chemical, magnetic, gravitational potential, light, sound, nuclear, elastic potential
2 of 15
What is another way of saying work done?
energy transferred
3 of 15
Where can gravitational potential energy be found?
in raised objects
4 of 15
What is specific heat capacity?
the amount of energy needed to to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1 degree
5 of 15
What is power?
the rate of energy transfer/ doing work
6 of 15
What is power measured in?
watts, one watt is one joule of energy transferred per second
7 of 15
What is conduction?
the process where vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
8 of 15
What is thermal conductivity?
a measure of how quickly energy is transferred through a material by conduction
9 of 15
What is convection?
it is where energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions, can only happen in gases and liquids e.g. radiators
10 of 15
How to reduce unwanted energy transfer?
use a lubricant to reduce friction force, preventing some energy in the system from being dissipated and using insulation to reduce the rate of energy transfer by heating
11 of 15
What is non-renewable energy?
energy resources (e.g. fossil fuels and nuclear) that will run out before new supplies are naturally created because they form underground over millions of years, they damage the environment but provide most of our energy
12 of 15
What are the three fossil fuels?
coal, oil, natural gas
13 of 15
What is renewable energy?
energy resources that will never run out, cause less damage to the environment, but don't provide as much energy (more is wasted) and some are unreliable (dependent on the weather)
14 of 15
What are the renewable energy resources?
solar, wind, wave, hydro-electric, bio mass, tidal, geothermal
