How does HIV affect our immune system?
We cannot deal with HIV - infection of the T helper CD4 cells - T cells kill virally infected cells and activate B cells > we actively destroy our T cells - progressively destroying immune response - CD4 cell count drops in HIV infection
1 of 10
What are autoimmune diseases?
Diseases in which the immune system itself is responsible for creating the response resulting in host damage
2 of 10
What is Coeliac Disease?
Gluten intolerance - autoimmune disease affecting small intestine - immune destruction of villi - leading to malabsorption - antibodies against TtGase
3 of 10
What is Myasthenia Gravis?
Progressive disease - facial problems - immune destruction of acetylcholine receptors - damage to neuromuscular junction > lose muscle control - antibodies against acetylcholine receptor
4 of 10
What are immune cancers?
Leukaemia: bone marrow/blood. Myeloma: bone marrow that effects plasma cells. Lymphoma: lymphatic system
5 of 10
What is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia?
Rapid increase of WBCs in body - cancer of lymphoid stem cell - anaemia, infection susceptebility, easy bruising, bone pain - either T or B cell overproduced - no space for other cells
6 of 10
What is Multiple Myeloma
Cancer of plasma cell - B cells produced in bone marrow > move to lymph nodes > MM develops after an immune response > Become plasma cells > antibodies > loss of control of plasma cells - no space for other cells
7 of 10
What is Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Cancer of B cells in lymph nodes - swelling of lymph nodes - fever, fatigue, enlarged spleen - spreads node to node
8 of 10
What is organ transplantation / rejection
An immune response to new tissue that it perceives as foreign - tissue becomes destroyed - antibodies are dissimilar
9 of 10
What is immune suppression?
Reducing the effect of the immune system - preventing the body rejecting an organ transplant -
