?
What is humoral immunity?
Many pathogens multiply in extracellular space - this space is protected by humoral immune system - antibodies produced by activated B cells - bind and kill pathogen
1 of 9
What are B cells?
Type of antigen presenting cell (APC) - present matched antigens to Th2 cells
2 of 9
How do B cells present antigen?
Express specific receptors for foreign antigens (engulf & express) - antigen is internalised by endocytosis - antigen derived proteins then selectively presented on B cell surface
3 of 9
How do T and B cells interact?
Helper T cells interact with B cells via an antigen bridge - B cells bind to one determinant on antigen molecule while T cells recognises another determinant (a carrier) - linked recognition - both B and T have been exposed to same antigen
4 of 9
What is the Th2 response?
T and B interactions lead to antigen recognition - cytokines produced - T helper cytokines dictate type of antibody produced -
5 of 9
What are plasma cells?
B cells (WBCs)
6 of 9
What are antibodies?
Y shaped proteins - secreted by plasma cells - expressed on B cell surface - prevent pathogenic adherence - promote phagocytosis -
7 of 9
What is opsonisation?
Pathogen marking - for ingestion by macrophage - antibodies can bind to Fc receptors
8 of 9
What is neutralisation?
Toxins bind to cell receptor - release causing cell poisoning. Antibodies block binding to virus receptor - IgA and IgG antibodies
