What are the 3 parts of the structure of an atom
Electrons
Protons
Neutrons
1 of 17
What are the relative mass of the parts of an atom?
Proton = 1
Neutron = 1
Electron = very small
2 of 17
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in an element is the atomic number
3 of 17
What is a mass number?
The mass number of an atom is its total number of protons and neutrons
4 of 17
How do you calculate the number of subatomic particles?
Number of protons = atomic number
Number of electrons = atomic number
Number of neutrons = mass number - atomic number
5 of 17
What is an Isotope?
An element with the same atomic number and different mass numbers
6 of 17
What is in an atomic shell?
Protons
Electrons
Neutrons

7 of 17
What was the earths early atmosphere like?
It had a large amount of co2
Little or no o2
Small amounts of other gases (ammonia and methane)
8 of 17
What is the most abundant gas in the modern atmosphere?
Nitrogen
9 of 17
What greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere?
Water vapor
co2
methane
10 of 17
What do the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere do?
Absorb heat radiation
Then release energy in all directions which keeps the earth warm
11 of 17
What human activates increase amount of greenhouse gases?
Farming cattle
Farming rice in paddy fields
Burning fossil fuels
Deforestation
12 of 17
What is potable water?
It is not pure water because it almost always contains dissolved impurities
13 of 17
How is most potable water made in the UK?
It usually is produced from naturally occurring fresh water by passing the water through filter beds to remove insoluble particles and sterilising the water to kill microbes
14 of 17
How does collision theory work?
The reactant particles must collide with each other
The particles must have enough energy for them to react
15 of 17
What is chromatography?
Paper chromatography is used to separate mixtures of soluble substances and to provide information on the possible identity of the substance present in the mixture
16 of 17
What phases does chromatography realise on?
The mobile phase is the solvent that moves through the paper carrying different substances with it
The stationary phase is contained on the paper and does not move through it
