Factors dictating how employees are represented in the workforce?
Organization size (small means each employee can speak), organisational structure (wide/flat employees are more likely to be represented), leadership style (democratic, employee representation is encouraged). external factors (recession).

What is a work council?
Work councils are committees made up of employer and employee representatives who meet regularly to discuss work issues.

What are trade unions?
Trade unions are associations which act on behalf of groups of employees in the workforce when negotiating pay and working conditions etc. with the employer.

Advantages of trade unions for employees.
Employees strengthen their bargaining power in a way not possible as an individual, allow employers and workers to communicate, give advice and assistance to individual employees with issues with employers.

How do trade unions take action in the workplace?
They negotiate with employers over rates of pay and bonuses for productivity, negotiate reasonable hours, negotiate safe working conditions, improve job security by combating unfair dismissal.

How do trade unions take action at a national level?
Put pressure on the government to pass legislation which benefits members of trade unions, e.g. minimum wage, redundancy payments, pension protection fund.

How do trade unions influence the decisions of the business?
Changes in working practises can be resisted by strikes, they can allow change by communicating the benefits of change to members, can stand against unfair redundancies.

What is the advantage of trade unions for the employer?
If a business is profitable then this is good for both employer and employee (therefore trade unions can help a business achieve its objectives), trade unions can share knowledge of employment law, health and safety etc with the employer.

Advantages of employee representation.
More affective to approach an organisation as a group (more influence), collective bargaining can acheive long term aims as employers sign contracts, save the time/ money of consulting every individual, senior managers get direct insight of concerns.

Disadvantages of employee representation.
Can mean industrial/ strike action which decreases productivity (leading to lost profits, and undermining of trust= breakdown in communication), majority vote may overall individual demands (opportunities are denied).
