why do we come to work?
• money, to be productive, sense of achievement and usefulness, to learn new skills, career progression, contribute to society, self-resect , provides scope for personal achievement

• we don’t always get the things that we want and the way that we want it . • employers have substantial control over the way in which employees carry out their work.

decline of trade union - there are now other ways of managing the employee relations which is not through the unions

how hr and employee relations are different?
 HRM deals with the recruiting side whereas employee relations  the main focus of HRM is the business strategy of the organisation. HR main focus is on managerial issues and on the individual employee relationship.

• describes the inherent conflict between labour and management

• management (capital) is interested in profit • workers are interested in fair gain for heir work • workers create surplus value • Therefore the potential for conflict is inherent in the employment relationship

Unitary approach
• Success of the business seen as the overriding priority, managerial interests dominant • assumption that no difference between employer and employee interests • managmen the ultimate source f power and authority,

• conflict between employees and employers seen as irrational – if there is conflict they think it s because of a lack of communication – then there would not be a need for conflict • use of team and family language/ metaphors

pluralist approach - the way they see the employment relationship
• recognition that employers and employees have different interests and objectives • identification of multiple/competing sources of power and authority (fox 1966) • conflict seen as rational and inevitable; trade unions as legitimate actors

Marxist approach or radical frame of reference
– very much focuses on the fact that organisations exploit employees. conflict will never end.
