What is emotional development?
Is a child's sense of security, personal identity or self-image and self awareness. They also learn to understand theirs and others feelings. Children need good self-esteem, if it is low they loose confidence and don't believe in their abilities.

Emotions.
Can be both positive and negative, they are inner feelings and can be hard to express. It is often difficult for a child to explain, fear, worry or anxiety. This is why they are often tantrums, tears and laughter. This means cause is not often clear.

How to support a child?
Children need to know emotions are ok, they need opportunities to express themselves e.g. give them something to relieve stress or read stories about things worrying them.

What is a comforter and how does it help?
It is common for a young child to have a comforter, often a soft toy, blanket/cloth, a dummy or thumb. It should never be used in place of adult love and affection.

Advantages of a thumb for a comforter...
Always there when a child wants it, The child controls their own comfort times, Cannot get lost.

Disadvantages of a thumb for a comforter...
May not always be clean, Sucking thumb can become a habit, Thumb may get sore, Teeth become distorted if thumb sucking continues into older years.

Advantages of a dummy for a comforter...
Can calm a distressed child very quickly, Can be cleaned and sterilized easily.

Disadvantages of a dummy for a comforter...
Is very unhygienic if dropped, Needs regular sterilizing, New dummies need to be brought regularly, Child will be distressed if it's lost and there's no spare, Long-term use can cause speech problems/distort teeth.

Advantages of a toy, cloth or blanket for a comforter...
Can help child get to sleep at night, Can comfort a child if apart from main carer, No damage to speech or teeth.

Disadvantages of toy, cloth or blanket for a comforter...
Child will be distressed if it is lost, Child may be distressed while it washes, Can become unhygienic if not washed regularly.
