Defined the faith of Elizabethan Church. Article 17 emphasised predestination, linking the Elizabethan Church to more radical, Calvnist teachings.

Reasons Called: Achieve religious settlement. Events: Pushed through parliament by the effects of strongly Prot councillors (Cecil with the assistance of Bacon, Cooke and Knollys): conservative opposition of House of Lords.
Reason Called: Elizabeth sought a subsidy; parliament was concerned to solve marriage and succession which Elizabeth considered royal prerogative. In 1563 Privy Councillors openly pressed the marriage issues.
