What is produced when metals react with oxygen
Make product of metal oxide. Metal oxides have pH of 8-14 (alkali) but non-metal oxides have pH of 1-6 (acids)
1 of 15
What are elements?
Substances made up of the same type of atom and cannot be broken down into anything simpler.
2 of 15
What is the periodic table?
A tabular display of the chemical elements
3 of 15
Name the first twenty elements
Hydrogen helium lithium berylium boron carbon nitrogen oxygen flourine neon sodium magnesium aluminium silicon phosphorus sulphur chlorine argon potassium calcium
4 of 15
What are mixtures?
A substance that contains more than one type of atom but the elements are mixed together. They are physical changes and so they can be separated. The elements retain their properties.
5 of 15
What are compounds?
A compound is made from different elements joined together in a chemical reaction so it cannot be separated with physical methods. Properties differ from the elements that it is made up of and you can write word equations to show them.
6 of 15
What are molecules?
Two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds. Molecules of a compound (impure) can contain different atoms joined together but molecules of an element (pure) contain the same type of atom joined together. You can represent this with formulae l
7 of 15
What is produced when metal reacts with water
Make products of metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas
8 of 15
What is produced when metal reacts with acid
Makes products of hydrogen and salt
9 of 15
What is the word equation for rusting?
Iron+Oxygen+Water= Iron Oxide (Rust)
10 of 15
What is oxidation?
A reaction with oxygen
11 of 15
Give an example of slow oxidation
Rusting
12 of 15
Give an example of fast oxidation
Combustion
13 of 15
How can you prevent rusting?
Painting, Oiling, Galvanising...
14 of 15
What is combustion?
Reaction with oxygen to release heat and light energy (burning). When something burns it reacts with oxygen to produce water and carbon dioxide. Three things are needed; fuel, oxygen, heat.
