A substance that contains more than one type of atom but the elements are mixed together. They are physical changes and so they can be separated. The elements retain their properties.

What are compounds?
A compound is made from different elements joined together in a chemical reaction so it cannot be separated with physical methods. Properties differ from the elements that it is made up of and you can write word equations to show them.

What are molecules?
Two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds. Molecules of a compound (impure) can contain different atoms joined together but molecules of an element (pure) contain the same type of atom joined together. You can represent this with formulae l

What is combustion?
Reaction with oxygen to release heat and light energy (burning). When something burns it reacts with oxygen to produce water and carbon dioxide. Three things are needed; fuel, oxygen, heat.
