What is an element?
An element is a substance that consists of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
1 of 26
Properties of metallic elements
-good conductors of electricity and heat -solid at room temp except Mercury -usually have high melting and boiling points -usually maluble and ductile -shiny solids/lustrous
2 of 26
Properties of non metallic elements
Poor conductors of electricity and heat -tend to be soft and brittle -usually dull -low melting and boiling points
3 of 26
Malleable
Can be hammered into different shapes
4 of 26
Ductile
They can be stretched out into wires
5 of 26
Sonorous
Capable of producing a deep or ringing sound
6 of 26
Lustrous
Shiny solid
7 of 26
Compound
Substances which contain two or more elements chemically joined together
8 of 26
Melting point
Temp which solid turns to liquid
9 of 26
Boiling point
Temp which liquid turns to gas
10 of 26
Sublimation
Direct change from solid to gas
11 of 26
Soluble
Can dissolve in a liquid
12 of 26
Insoluble
Will nor dissolve in a liquid
13 of 26
Solute
Solid that dissolves in a substance
14 of 26
Solvent
Liquid that the solute dissolves in
15 of 26
Solution
Result of a solute dissolved in a solvent
16 of 26
Residue
Insoluble solid on filter paper
17 of 26
Filtrate
Liquid or dissolved solution that passes through filter paper
18 of 26
Distillate
Product collected by distillation
19 of 26
Miscible
When two different liquids mix well
20 of 26
Immiscible
When two different liquids do not mix
21 of 26
Aqueous
Water is the solute
22 of 26
Saturated solution
One which contains as much dissolved solute possible at that given temperature
23 of 26
Crystallistation
Occurs when crystals appear from a hot saturated solution which has been allowed to cool/ occurs when crystals appear from a solution which has been evaporated
24 of 26
Chromatography
Method used to separate a mixture of dissolved substances in a solution
25 of 26
Distillation
Used to separate to liquids with different boiling points
