Electrolysis

?
What is electrolysis?
The process of passing an electric current through an ionic compound in aqueous solution to split it into its elements.

What is the Cathode?
Negative electrode
2 of 17
What is the anode
Positive electrode
3 of 17
What is a cation?
A positive ion ( it goes to the cathode)
4 of 17
What is an anion?
A negative ion ( it goes to the anode)
5 of 17
Give two examples of binary ionic compounds.
sodium chloride
copper sulphate
6 of 17
What is an electrolyte?
The solution through which the electric current is passed.
7 of 17
Why does electrolysis only occur in the molten state or in aqueous solution?
The ions can only migrate in a liquid. in solids they cannot move around.
8 of 17
what does aqueous mean?
The substance is dissolved in water
9 of 17
What does molten mean?
The substance is melted
10 of 17
name the two ions that are formed when water ionises.
H+ and OH- ions
11 of 17
In aqueous solution of sodium chloride, how do you know which positive ion goes to the Cathode?
The least reactive ion goes to the cathode. In sodium chloride solution, H+ ions go to the cathode.
12 of 17
In aqueous solution of sodium chloride, how do you know which negative ion goes to the anode?
As Chloride ( halide) ions are present, they go to the anode. The order is halides, then hydroxide, sulphates and any other negative ions.
13 of 17
Which element is formed when hydroxide or sulphate ions go to the anode?
oxygen
14 of 17
Name the ions formed from electrolysis of aluminium chloride
Al 2+, O 2-
15 of 17
Why is cryolite added to aluminium oxide?
To lower the melting point and so less electrical energy is needed to melt the aluminium oxide.
16 of 17
Why do the carbon electrodes need to be replaced?
The carbon electrodes are non-inert(reactive) and react with the oxygen at the anode to produce carbon dioxide.
