What is the electrolyte?
The substance broken down by electrolysis. It is a liquid or solution and can conduct electricity.
1 of 23
Why can't an ionic solid be electrolysed?
Because the ions are in a fixed position and cannot move.
2 of 23
What is the negative electrode?
Cathode
3 of 23
What is the positive electrode?
Anode
4 of 23
What is a positive ion called?
Cation
5 of 23
What is a negative ion called?
Anion
6 of 23
What happens to the ions at the cathode?
Ions are reduced
7 of 23
What happens to the ions at the anode?
Ions are oxidised
8 of 23
What is electrolysis?
Decomposing Ionic compounds into simpler substances using an electric current.
9 of 23
When is electrolysis used to extract a metal?
When the metal is too reactive to be reduced with carbon or reacts with carbon.
10 of 23
Why is cryolite used in the extraction of aluminium oxide?
Aluminium has a very high melting point and therefore is expensive to melt. Cryolite lowers aluminium oxide's melting point and saves energy.
11 of 23
If a molten ionic compound is electrolysed, what is produced at the cathode?
The metal
12 of 23
If a molten ionic compound id electrolysed, what is produced at the anode?
The non-metal
13 of 23
What is the half equation for chlorine?
2Cl- > Cl2 + 2e-
14 of 23
What is the half equation for zinc?
Zn2+ + 2e- > Zn
15 of 23
What is the half equation for Hydrogen?
2H+ + 2e- > H2
16 of 23
What are halide ions?
Group 7 ions (Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine)
17 of 23
When aqueous solutions are electrolysed, what is produced at the cathode?
Hydrogen gas will be produced if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen, if not a solid layer of the pure metal will be produced instead.
18 of 23
When an aqueous solution is electrolysed, what is produced at the anode?
If halide ions are present, then molecules of Chlorine, Bromine or Iodine will be formed. If not the Hydroxide ions will produce oxygen.
19 of 23
How can you test for Chlorine?
It will bleach damp litmus paper, turning it white.
20 of 23
How can you test for Hydrogen?
You can test for a squeaky pop with a lit splint.
21 of 23
How can you test for Oxygen?
Oxygen will relight a glowing splint.
22 of 23
When halide ions aren't present when you are electrolysing an aqueous solution, what is the half equation at the anode?
4OH- > O2 + 2H2O + 4e-
