Electrode potentials

?
What is an electrochemical cell?
Cells made from two different metals dipped in salt solutions of their own ions and connected by a external circuit
1 of 14
What reactions occur in a half cell?
Redox reaction
2 of 14
What is a salt bridge?
A filter paper soaked in KNO3 which connects the two cells to allow the flow ofnions
3 of 14
What is the emf or cell potential and how is it calculated?
A voltmeter in the external circuit shows the voltage between the two half cells
4 of 14
What electrode is used when there are two aqueous substances?
Platinum is used as the electrode because its inert and conducts electricity
5 of 14
Negative electrode potential =
Oxidation (backwards reaction)
6 of 14
Positive electrode potential =
Reduction (forwards reaction)
7 of 14
What do single and double lines mean in shorthand?
Double vertical lunes show a salt bridge and things in different phases are separated by a vertical line
8 of 14
Which half-cell goes on the left in the shorthand form?
The half cell that has the more negative electrode potential on the left
9 of 14
What is the cell potential equation?
More positive electrode potential - more negative electrode potential
10 of 14
What standard are all electrochemical cells based on?
You measure the electrode potential of a half cell against a standard hydrogen electrode
11 of 14
What standard conditions need to be in place in a standard hydrogen half cell?
Concentrations of 1 mol, temperatures of 298k and pressure of 100Kpa
12 of 14
More reactive a metal is...
...the more it wants to lose electrons to form a positive ion, they have negative electrode potentials
13 of 14
More reactive a non metal is...
...the more it wants to gain electrons to form a negative ion, they form positive electrode potentials
