1975: UK voted to remain in the EEC (now the EU). This is the only UK-wide referendum. 1997: Wales voted for Welsh assembly (50.3%-49.7%) turnout was 50.1%. 1998: London voted for a mayor and assembly (72%-28%) turnout was 34%

Initiatives
California's Preposition 8 (2008) banned same-sex marriage and in 2010 it was proposed to legalise cannabis. This required 434,000 votes (5% of total votes cast in last election for state governor). This was put to ballot in November 2010.
