What is an election?
A device by which popular votes can be converted into seats awarded to representatives or parties, or used to elect single office holders or political leaders.

What is a mandate?
The authority given to a candidate or party to implement its manifesto commitments. The mandate is granted normally by election.

What is majoritarian representation?
A political system that tends to throw up a government that enjoys a majority within representative institutions and therefore is able to dominate party politics.

What is a strong government?
CA characteristic of political systems such as the UK, where the executive branch go the government is dominant. Government is able to dominate legislature and so is able to implement most of its policies without excessive obstruction.

What is a stable government?
A characteristic of a political system where governments tend to survive their full term sand are unlikely to be removed from power between elections.

What are majority systems?
Electoral systems where the winning candidate is required to win an overall majority, i.e. more than 50% of the votes.

What are plurality systems?
Electoral systems where the winning candidate does not require an overall majority but merely needs to win more votes than any other candidate.

What is proportional representation?
An electoral system that converts votes into seats in a broadly proportional way.

What is plurality?
An electoral system which awards a position or seat in the legislature to a candidate who has achieved more votes than any other, even if it does not represent an absolute majority.

What is a party system?
A typical structure of parties within a political system. It describes the normal number of parties that compete effectively. In the UK we have a two-party system.
