When a wire is made in to coil

The fields from side of the coil tends to cancel out the fields from the other side giving a weaker field outside.

A coil of wire with current flowing through it.

Closer to the wire and gets weaker as you increase distance

Putting a piece of iron inside the coil especially if its a soft iron core.
