What was the problem?

WW1 had interrupted a research program on fighting infection. Also research had been going on for years to find a chemical compound that would kill bacteria in the body.

what was discovered?

Ehrlich discovered salvarsan which killed microbes causing the disease. He thought a chemical compound could be used to stain the bacteria causing an infection, but would kill them. A magic bullet would shoot the bacteria, but not harm the patient.

He had seen how the body produces antibodies to attack specific bacteria causing an infection, he believed he could find a chemical which could work in the same way.

Chance- they might of missed 606th compound found. Determination- they tried 605 times, which failed. Government- gave them money for it.

it was difficult to apply and could harm the patient, also it laid the foundations for more development of the magic bullet
