When was the tripartite system first introduced?
It was brought in by the 1944 Education Act

They offered a non-academic 'practical' curriculum and access to manual work. They were for pupils who failed the 11+ and they were mainly working-class

What were technical schools?
Schools which taught mechanical, scientific and engineering skills. However, they only existed in a few areas

It channelled the two different social classes into two different types of school that offered unequal opportunities
