What is material deprivation?
Refers to poverty and a lack of material necessities such as adequate housing and diet

What is material deprivation measured by?
How many children in a school will be allocated free school meals (FSM)

How will housing impact on educational achievement?
Lack of space- no room to complete school work, lack of outdoor space- play and exploration, cold or damp housing- illness...absence from school

How will diet and health impact on educational achievement?
Not eating healthily- weak immune system, poor diet- can lead to poor concentration and behavioural problems... lack of progress in lessons

Children may have to have hand me down items- bullying, children may have to work for themselves, may not have the correct equipment... could be sent home

How does intellectual development impact on educational achievement?
W/C homes lack resources to help children develop (books+interactive toys) J.W.B Douglas found that W/C pupils scored lower on tests, he argued this is because their parents are less likely to read with them

How does language impact on educational achievement?
The language used in W/C homes is seen as deficient, W/C families are more likely to communicate through gestures and use disjointed phrases, therefore children fail to develop the language skills necessary to do well in school

What is fatalism?
A belief in fate, that 'what will be, will be' and there is nothing you can do to change your status. Contrasts with M/C values of changing position through status

Valuing being part of a group more than as an individual. contrasts with the M/C view as they think individuals should not be held back by group loyalties

What is immediate gratification?
Seeking pleasure now rather than making sacrifices in order to get rewards in the future, M/C emphasises deferred gratification

What is present-time orientation?
Seeing the present as more important than the future and not having long-term goals

What is compensatory education?
The policy was designed to tackle problems of cultural deprivation by providing extra resources for schools and deprived areas
