Interviewed working class girls in 1976, found they cared most about marriage, kids and relationships above careers. Returned in 1994 to find this had changed around, as well as them being more confident and hard working

Stanworth - Gender (1983)
nterviews A level teachers and describes both attitude of female and male teachers would impede progress of girls. Teachers found it easier to remember boy’s names and stereotypes were held of what the girls would be doing in the future.

Dale Spender - Gender
Looked using observation at classroom behaviour and found: Boys dominate, Girls are more passive, Teachers give more attention to boys Found this in her own lessons even while trying to keep balanced the time between both sexes.

Mistos & Brown - Gender (1998)
Girls more likely to stay on in education, however still under-represented in science and engineering. They have highlighted equality of opportunity – increase in job opportunities.

Goddard-Spear - Gender
Gave secondary science teachers work to mark – She found that teachers would consistently assign lower grades when they thought that a girl had produced it.

Tony Sewell - Ethnicity
Argues that Black boys in particularly are grown in mother headed lone parent families therefore lacking male role models. Also they are not disciplined properly. This makes them vulnerable to peer pressure and form Anti-school subcultures.

Mac & Ghaill - Ethnicity
Did a study in Kilby School and found Black students punished harshly, formed Anti-school subcultures. This is good explanation as the study was done to find the experiences of black pupils.

Smith and Tomlinson - Ethnicity
that the overall effectiveness of the school will have the biggest effect on any pupil’s attainment

Gillborn & Drew - Ethnicity (1990)
Agree to some extent with Smith and Tomlinson, but note that when this research was done there was little attention paid to the problem of racism.
