Fade In/Out
These transitions are used to fade in the beginning as well as fade out the end of a sequence – these are usually black.

Dissolve
This transition is used to signify the passing of time – one shot dissolves into the other.

Slow Motion
This transition is often used for dramatic effect.

Cuts
This is just a cut from one shot to another, without a transition.

Shot Reverse Shot
This is mainly a filming technique, but put together in the edit to generally use when two people are conversing. We see the different points of view.

Montage
A sequence of shots put together to imply a long event happening over a shorter amount of time.
