What is an Ionic bond
atoms involved in the reaction either donate or receive electron.
1 of 16
What is a covalent bond
The atoms involved in the reaction share electrons
2 of 16
How are hydrogen bonds formed between water molecules
when the slightly negative oxygen atom on a water molecule attracts the slightly positive hydrogen atom on another water molecule
3 of 16
why is water a solvent
it forms a layer around the ions and breaks the ions apart, thus it dissolves many substances
4 of 16
why is it a good thing that water is liquid at room temperture
it provides a liquid environment for both cells and aquatic enviroments
5 of 16
define specific heat capacity
how much heat is needed to increase the temperture of a fixed amount of substance by a certain amount
6 of 16
why is it good that water has a specific heat capcity
water can resist temperature changes
7 of 16
define latent heat of vaporisation
how much heat is needed to turn liquid into gas
8 of 16
why is latent heat of vaporisation a good property of water
it causes evaporation of water on the surface which provides a cooling effect, e,g sweating
9 of 16
define latent heat of fusion
how much heat must be lost for a substance to freeze
10 of 16
why is latent heat of fusion a good property of water
makes water slow to freeze to provide a stable enviroment
11 of 16
why is is a good thing that water is less dense as a solid than a liquid
when water freezes, it forms hydrogen bonds with 4 others that forms a lattice that holds the molecules futher apart. it makes the ice float on water so that aqautic organisms can live underneath
12 of 16
define cohension
when water molecules stick together by forming hydrogen bonds with each other
13 of 16
define adhension
water molecules can stick to other polar molecules
14 of 16
what is capillarity
water can move against gravity up a narrow tube by capillarity. this is when adhension enables water to stick to the sides
15 of 16
what is surface tension
this is when cohension takes placeand forms a skin on top of the water allowing organims to walk on top of it.
