What does their body temperature do and what are ectotherms not able to do?
Their body temperature tends to fluctuate and they are not able to increase respiration rates to generate heat internally.
1 of 8
How do they keep warm and what are they able to regulate?
They rely on external sources of heat and are able to regulate their body temperature in all but the most extreme conditions.
2 of 8
What are the advantages of being an ectotherm?
They use less food in respiration and therefore need to find less food and can survive for longer periods without eating. A greater proportion of energy they obtained from food can be used for growth.
3 of 8
What do ectotherms do when they are too hot?
They change their behaviour/physiology to decrease heat absorption and increase loss of heat.
4 of 8
What do ectotherms do when they are too cold?
They will change their behaviour/physiology to increase heat absorption and decrease loss of heat to environment.
5 of 8
What are the disadvantages of being an ectotherm?
May not be capable of activity in winter as they never warm up+they must have sufficient energy stores to survive over winter without eating. Are less active in cooler temperatures, may need to warm up before being active, increasing risk of predation.
6 of 8
How do ectotherms adapt to decrease their body temperature?
They move body away from sun to expose less SA+absorb less heat. Hide in burrows to decrease heat absorption. Increase breathing to evaporate more water. Alter body shape.
7 of 8
How do ectotherms adapt to increase their body temperature?
Orientate body to sun to expose more SA and decrease heat absorption. Alter body shape and expose body to sun to absorb more heat.
