Ecosystem processes

?
What is a producer, what does it mean and what's a consumer too?
Plants and algae are producers because they make their own food using materials they've found in their environment. Animals are consumers-they have to eat over organisms to survive.

What is photosynthesis?
Plant make food using phtosynthesis. This is a process where the plant takes in carbon dioxide and water (reactants) then using light energy they convert it into glucose and oxygen (products). The oxygen doesn't get used. It's a waste product.
2 of 7
Where does photosynthesis occur?
Photosynthesis mainly takes place in the leaves because there are lots of chlorophyll in them but it also happens in the stem. They are green because the pigment chlorophyll is green giving them colour, chlorophyll needs light to transfer energy

How does water get into a plant?
When it rains the water soaks in the soil and the water diffuses through the root hair cells and is transported around the plant in xylem tubes. When water evaporates through the leaves more water is transported there.
4 of 7
How do gases get in and out of a plant?
Through tiny pores on the underside of a leaf. They let gases diffuse into the leaf. Carbon Dioxide diffuses in and oxygen diffuses out.
5 of 7
Structure of a leaf
Green by chlorophyll to absorb light, thin so gases can diffuse in and out easily, have a large surface area to absorb lots of light, have xylem tubes to transport water and phloem tubes to transport glucose.
6 of 7
Structure of a leaf
The underside of a leaf is lighter than the top side. This is because there are fewer chlorophyll because sunlight hits the top of a leaf most of the time. The top of a leaf is waxy so not as much water is evaporated.
