What is the primary industry?
The extraction of raw materials from the ground or sea.

Depletion of Resources (Mining industry has declined because raw materials have been used up), Cheap imports, Mechanisation (Reduced the number of workers needed) and Social Change (jobs are seen as dirty, there are fewer career prospects & low paid)

Cheaper productions in LICs and MICs and Globalisation.

There are few regulations that factory owners have to comply with, therefore it is cheap to set up factories, China has a large workforce (it is estimated that 500,00 million people will leave the countryside in search of work over the next 20 years)

China has vast reserves of raw materials such as coal, oil and natural gas, a global location close to the developing markets of South Korea, Taiwan and India and a long coastline with ports on major trade routes.

Rising incomes and a higher standard of living for urban people, a growth in the economy (world's 2nd largest manufacturing country), more exports than imports, a widening gap between rich and poor and poor pay for factory workers - 40p an hour.

Attractive landscaped area attracts workers, next to a large indoor shopping area, The Galleria, transport system and located on Hatfield business park with firms like T-Mobile, workers from these firms will use the club because of its proximity.

What are the benefits of de-industrialisation in rural areas?
Old industrial buildings are turned into tourist attractions like the Eden Project in Cornwal, less environmental pollution from factory outputs, new wildlife habitats created and new forestry areas can be created like The National Forest.

What are the costs of de-industrialisation in rural areas?
There are job losses in the countryside, rural communities have been broken up and it has cost local authorities to clean up derelict areas.

What factors enable globalisation?
Modern communications (i.e. internet) allows quick/easy contact with producers, developments in transport technology means that goods can be transported quickly, easily and cheaply and efficient motorway networks enables efficient transport routes.
