Identify and describe the terms predator and prey
predators catch and eat the pry
3 of 18
What is a predator-prey cycle?
There are always more prey than predators. The number of predators increases because there are more prey, so there is more food for them to eat. The number of prey reduces because there are more predators, so more get eaten.

What is a quadrat and a transect?
A transect line is a line, marked at regular interval. A quadrat is a framed area. These are placed on the ground to look at the plants or slow-moving animals within them.
5 of 18
Describe a step by step method to study the distribution of organisms in an ecosystem
A quadrat could be placed along a transect. Systematic sampling would be used to link changes in species to abiotic factors such as immersion by water, temperature fluctuations, light intensity, all of which are influenced by the tide.
6 of 18
Explain the importance of the carbon to living organisms
Living organisms consist of organic carbon, while non-living things are comprised of inorganic carbon. Plants obtain carbon from the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide, which they need for photosynthesis.
7 of 18
Name and describe the processes involved in the carbon cycle
The carbon cycle involves the exchange of carbon between living organisms (biotic) and their atmosphere (abiotic). In the carbon cycle, carbon is constantly removed from, and returned to, the environment.
8 of 18
Explain the role of microorganisms in cycling materials through an ecosystem
Materials on Earth cycle between living organisms and the environment. Microorganisms are vital for these cycles. They break down dead matter and release the materials back to the environment.
9 of 18
Explain the importance of the water cycle to living organisms.
The contributions of living organisms to the water cycle are vital. Plants, particularly trees, contribute greatly to the water cycle because of the processes they use to absorb and release energy.
10 of 18
Name and describe the processes involved in the water cycle
The major processes involved are precipitation, evaporation, interception, transpiration, infiltration, percolation, retention, detention, overland flow, throughflow, and runoff.
11 of 18
Name 3 factors that affect the rate of decay of biological material
Temperature, water and the availability of oxygen affect the rate of decay.
12 of 18
How does temperature affect the rate of decay of biological material
High temperatures prevent decay, low temperatures slow decay. High temperatures destroy enzymes and proteins, killing the organisms responsible for decay. Low temperatures slow the rate of reaction of enzymes and will prevent growth and reproduction.
13 of 18
How does water affect the rate of decay of biological material?
Lack of oxygen will slow or prevent most forms of decay Oxygen is needed for respiration by organisms. Some bacteria can survive without oxygen, such as those used in biogas generators.
14 of 18
How does water availability affect the rate of decay of biological material?
Lack of water will slow or prevent decay Water is needed for transport and to support reactions inside organisms. Decay organisms need water to digest their food.
15 of 18
Explain why gardeners need to know about decay
Garderners want to improve the nutrient content of their soil so they need to develop the most efficient way of decomposing their organic waste so use as a fertiliser.
16 of 18
Explain why farmers need to know about decay
Farmers need to know about decay because they need to be able to store their crops correctly to prevent them from rotting prior to selling or using at a later date.
17 of 18
Describe the uses of anaerobic decay
The products of anaerobic decay are methane and carbon dioxide. We use methane as a fuel. Both gases are greenhouse gases, which contribute towards global warming.
