What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem are all the communities as well as non- living parts of an area together make up an ecosystem
1 of 22
What is the definition of 'population'?
'Population' is a group of organisms from the same species who live together at the same time in the same place that if reproducing sexually can interbreed
2 of 22
What is the definition of a 'community'?
'Community' is all of the different species living together in one area at the same time
3 of 22
What do plants compete for in a community?
Light, Water, Space, Mineral ions from the Soil
4 of 22
What is a 'habitat'?
A habitat is the place where an organism species, population or community is living
5 of 22
What is a 'biosphere'?
A 'biosphere' are all of the earth's ecosystems together that make one large ecosystem.
6 of 22
What is a 'producer'?
A producer can be a plant or some photosynthetic bacteria who transfer energy from the sunlight into organic compounds which in most cases take the form of carbohydrates
7 of 22
What is a 'consumer'?
A 'consumer' are all of the organisms who consume the energy created by the producers either directly or indirectly
8 of 22
What is 'productivity'?
'Productivity' is the amount of energy in each organism in each trophic level over a set period of time
9 of 22
What is an 'adaptation'?
An 'adaptation' is the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment
10 of 22
How do you see how many plants are spread or distributed in a habitat?
1. Stretch a long tape, called a transect line, across the area in question. 2. Place a quadrat down at regular intervals along the transect line. 3. Count the number of plants in the quadrat each time.
11 of 22
What does 'abiotic' mean?
'Abiotic' means something that is non- living
12 of 22
What does 'biotic' mean?
'Biotic' means something that is living
13 of 22
Can you name some abiotic factors?
Light intensity, Temperature, Moisture levels, Soil pH and mineral content, Wind intensity and direction, Carbon dioxide levels for plants, Oxygen levels for aquatic life
14 of 22
Can you name some biotic factors?
Availibility of food, New predators arriving, New pathogens/ diseases, One species outcompeting another
15 of 22
What is 'pollution'?
'Pollution' is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse change
16 of 22
What is 'global warming'?
'Global warming' is the gradual increase in the earths temperature
17 of 22
What is 'interdependence'?
'Interdependence' is when the species rely on each other for food, shelter, pollination, seed dispersal, etc.
18 of 22
What is a 'stable community'?
In 'stable community' all the species and environmental factors are in balance so that population sizes stay fairly constant
19 of 22
Can you name the decomposers?
Bacteria + Fungi
20 of 22
What factors do decomposers need to break down dead waste?
Oxygen, Moisture, Suitable Temperature, Suitable pH
21 of 22
What are 'top consumers' also called?
Apex Predators
