?
What are two ways that carbon dioxide can enter the atmosphere?
Respiration and burning of fossil fuels
1 of 18
How does deforestation affect the atmosphere with Carbon Dioxide??
The burning of trees and decomposition of wood increases the rate of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere. As less photosynthesis is taking place, less carbon dioxide can be removed from the atmosphere.
2 of 18
How does deforestation affect the atmosphere with methane?
Forests are often chopped down to be replaced by agriculture, with the purpose of growing rice or farming cattle. These activities produce methane, which is a greenhouse gas.
3 of 18
What are the four negative consequences of deforestation?
Methane and carbon dioxide enter the atmosphere, a loss of ecosystem services and a loss of biodiversity.
4 of 18
How does deforestation cause a loss of biodiversity?
Deforestation destroys habitats. This causes biodiversity to be lost.
5 of 18
WHat does deforestation free up land for?
Biofuels, cattle and rice fields
6 of 18
What is deforestation?
Deforestation is the cutting, clearing and removal of forests in order to free up land for biofuels as well as cattle and rice fields.
7 of 18
How is carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere?
Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere naturally by green plants and algae during photosynthesis. Other natural stores of carbon include bodies of water and peat bogs.
8 of 18
Whats the greenhouse effect?
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface. When the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases.
9 of 18
What are greenhouse gases said to cause by the majority of climate scientists?
Climate change
10 of 18
What are the seven effects of global warming?
Melting ice, ocean acidification, distribution of species, change in migration patterns, rise in sea surface temperature, extreme weather and reduction of biodiversity.
11 of 18
What are the consequences of the ice melting?
Melting ice causes sea levels to rise, which could flood coastal habitats forever, losing the land and associated biodiversity. Changes to the way sea ice changes through the year is affecting the survival of animals at both poles.
12 of 18
What are the effects of the sea bed temperature rising?
Bleaching of sensitive corals
13 of 18
What negative effect might the distribution of species have on Europe?
Malaria-carrying mosquitoes have already spread to several European countries. It is possible that malaria and similar exotic diseases will become an established part of life as far North as the UK in the near future.
14 of 18
What is the negative effect of ocean acidification?
Makes it harder for corals to build a skeleton
15 of 18
What are the effects of the reduction of biodiversity?
The rate at which the climate is changing makes rapid adaptation key to avoiding extinction. This is particularly challenging for large-bodied animals that typically have longer generation times.
16 of 18
What are five ways to maintain biodiversity?
Breeding programmes, government-imposed targets (deforestation and emission reductions), paying farmers to maintain hedgerows and field margins, recycling waste and the protection of rare and threatened habitats.
17 of 18
Why is recycling good for maintaining biodiversity
Recycling slows down the expansion of landfill sites and reduces the need to extract new natural resources.
