Ecological terms

?
Species
A group of similar organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
1 of 12
Population
A group of individuals of the same species inhabiting the same area.
2 of 12
Carrying Capacity
Maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water are available.
3 of 12
Intraspecific competition
Interaction in population ecology, whereby members of the same species compete for limited resources.
4 of 12
Interspecific competition
Individuals of different species compete for the same resources in an ecosystem (e.g food or living space)
5 of 12
Predation
Form of symbiotic relationship between two organisms of unlike species in which one of them acts as a predator that captures and feeds on the other organism that serves as prey. (E.g lion and zebra)
6 of 12
Habitat
Ecological or environmental area that is inhabited by a particular plant or animal. Its the natural environment that an organism lives.
7 of 12
Community
An association of populations of two of more different species occupying the same geographical area and in a particular time.
8 of 12
Ecosystem
Community of living organisms in conjunction with the non-living components of their environment interacting in a system.
9 of 12
Niche
The place or function of a given organism within its ecosystem.
10 of 12
Abiotic factor
A non-living condition or thing like climate or habitat that influences or affects an ecosystem and the organisms in it. These can determine which species will survive in a given environment.
11 of 12
Biotic factor
Any living component or thing that affects the population of another organism of the environment.
