Food can be comforting when we are sad or down, and we have learned to associate certain foods with pleasurable feelings.

What is the serotonin hypothesis?
Carbohydrates contain the amino acid tryptophan. This is used by the brain to produce serotonin. Low levels of serotonin have been linked with depression.

What does the serotonin hypothesis suggest?
People who are sad will increase their carbohydrate intake to increase their levels of sertoning and thus, improve their mood.

What is the opiate hypothesis?
Opiate neurotransmitters are chemicals very similar to the drug heroin, and heroin acts on these opiate pathways on the brain.

What does the opiate hypothesis suggest?
Heroain produces pleasurable feelings and therefore is likely to be part of the brain's reward systhem. Eating and drinking activates this system.
