What does the magnitude of the earthquake depend on?
Hypocentre of the earthquake, strength of the shock, time of day, building/ground type, level of development, population density of area affected, distance of epicentre from population and land use

What is an earthquake?
Earthquakes are the result of the sudden movement of rock along a fault zone beneath the surface, usually centred in tectonically active areas.

The point in the earth where an earthquake rupture starts
