Some Muslims believe that there is potential life from the moment of conception but that human life really starts when the foetus receives a soul.
All Muslims would agree that abortion is wrong but some muslims believe that abortion is a last resort, but may be used in certain situations. Regarded as the lesser of the two evils in life threatening situations.

Many muslims believe that life enters a foetus at 120 days through the soul - Ensoulment .

Abortion is practised up until ensoulment. Abortion may be allowed if the mother's life is in danger/suffers upto that time limit. If done after 120 days it is haram as mother and child have equal rights after ensoulment.

In 1990 the Islamic world Islamic World League excepted abortion before 120 days for severe disability.
Blood ties are important in Islam - so if a couple raise a child that is not their own, they do not adopt it. The child remains a member of the original family, so it is more like fostering.
