1) Bilogical Treatment: Karp & Frank. Aim: to compare the drug treatment & non-drug treatments for deppression.
Methodolgy:-review articleof previous research -concentrated on women with deppression -independent design. Results: adding psychological treatments to drug therapy didn't increase effectiveness of drug therapy.

-bio.medical model has been criticised 4 making people paitients, little emphasis on self help, getting well has become proffessionalised.-chemotherapy and other bio.treatment have several side effects. -drug treats the symptom not the cause

2) Behavioural treatment: McGrath. Lucy with specific noise phobia using sytematic desensitisation.
Findings: 1st session Lucy was reluctant to burst balloons=she cried. -4th session=signal balloon to burst 10m away. -after few sessions=less scared & popped balloon herself. -thermometre score reduced.

-effective for phobias but not for psychotic behaviours. -Behavioural treatments are reductionist= don;t take ito account other factors such as cognitive/biological influences=they maybe thge cause for dysfunctional behaviour.

3) Cognitive Treatment:Beck: Groups showed sig.decrease in depression symptomson all 3 ratings scale. -cognitive treatment group=79% improved in comparison to 20% drug treatment:self reports. -drop out rate:5%:cog..group & 32%:drug therapy
Evaluation: cog.therapy leads to better treatment of deppression.-rating scale used. -high in eco.validity patients already suffering from depression and attent psychiatric clinic
