sects collapse on leavers death or a more formal bureaucratic leadership takes over turning it into a denomination

schism. Tension between needs of deprived and privileged so deprived break away to found world rejecting sect

Initial fervour and great tension between sects beliefs and those of wider society

Denominationalism- 'protestant ethic ' effect and coolness of second generation means fervour disappears.

further schism- less privileged break away to found new sect true to original message

If they follow or not depends on how they answer 'what shall we do to be saved?'.

Conversionist sects (Wilson)
aim to convert large number of people. They are likely to grow into more formal denomination e.g evangelicals

Adventist (Wilson)
await second coming of christ and must be separate from corrupt world to be saved. This separation prevents compromise into denomination. e.g. seventh day adventists

established sects (Wilson)
some sects become established e.g Amish. Many succeed in socialising children into high level of commitment. However globalisation make it hard for future sects to stay separate but easier to recruit from 3rd world countries as they attract deprived
