Dynamic Cell - Extracellular Matrixes in Animals and Plants

?
What is an Extracellular matrix
Extracellular structure assembled by materials excreted by cells to the exterior of the cell.
1 of 9
What are the fibrous framework in plants and animals
Plants = polyssacharide fibres, Animals = fibrous proteins.
2 of 9
What is the extracellular matrix of plants and what is the three layers it is composed of
Cell wall. Composed of middle lamella, primary cell wall and secondary cell wall.
3 of 9
What is the middle lamella, what is it made from (2) and what does it do
This is the first component secreted by cell onto its surface. Made of pectic acid (forms hydrated gel) and pectin (compression resistance) which glues the cells together which tantalises them by forming a gel complex.
4 of 9
What is the primary cell wall, what is it composed of (5) and what do they do
This is the first cell wall produced and pushes the middle lamella away. Made of cellulose + hemicellulose (tensile strength), pectic acid, pectin and protiens.
5 of 9
What is the secondary cell wall and what is ti composed of (3)
Made after the primary cell wall has stopped expanding. Made up of celllose, lignin and other polysaccharides. Once this has formed the cells can no longer divide.
6 of 9
What does an animal ECM consist of
Fibrous protein fibres embedded in a matrix of a highly charged background matrix.
7 of 9
What does the fibrous content of animal ECM consist of (2)
Collagen (high tensile strength) and elastic fibres (give elastic component)
8 of 9
What does the background matrix component of animal ECM consist of (3)
GAGs (attracts water, compression resistant) glycoproteins and proteoglycans (interact with other molecules)
